How one broken leg accidentally turned my French Bulldog into a blanket addict.

When we first brought Zeus home, I was determined to find him the perfect dog bed.

I tried everything.

Donut beds.

Raised cots.

Beds with bolsters.

Cave beds.

Memory foam beds.

If the pet store sold it, I probably bought it.

Zeus had exactly one opinion.

Every bed was a toy.

I’d leave for work and come home to stuffing scattered all over his kennel like a tiny tornado had passed through. Some beds lasted a week. Some didn’t even survive a day.

Finding the “perfect” bed quickly became an expensive hobby.

By the end of September, I had almost accepted that maybe Zeus just wasn’t a dog who liked beds.

Then everything changed.

The Blanket That Changed Everything

When Zeus was just a puppy, he broke his leg.

It was one of those moments every dog owner hopes they never experiences.

On the drive to the emergency vet, I put him in his car seat—which is basically the only bed he had never tried to destroy—and because he was shaking, I covered him with a soft fleece blanket.

That blanket stayed with him through everything.

It went with him to the emergency hospital.

It stayed with him at the surgery center.

When he came home after surgery, it stayed in his kennel while he recovered.

It smelled like home.

It smelled like us.

Somewhere during those weeks, Zeus decided blankets were different.

Unlike every expensive dog bed I’d bought…

He never tried to destroy it.

Instead…

He fell in love with it.

Blankets Became His Safe Place

Once Zeus recovered, we kept using blankets instead of dog beds.

Whenever he climbed into his kennel, he’d nose the blanket into exactly the right spot before curling up.

Then he’d burrow underneath until only the tip of his nose—or sometimes just one little ear—was sticking out.

That’s still how he sleeps today.

If you walk by his kennel at night, there’s a good chance you won’t even see a dog.

You’ll just see a pile of blankets making little Frenchie snoring noises.

I honestly think blankets became more than something soft to sleep on.

They became his safe place.

Then Electra Joined the Family…

When we brought Electra home, I thought maybe we’d try dog beds again.

After all…

Zeus had gotten older.

Surely he’d outgrown chewing them.

Nope.

Electra loved having a bed.

Zeus loved destroying it.

We even tried giving them separate kennels.

That lasted about five minutes.

Zeus would reach through the divider, hook Electra’s bed with his teeth, drag it into his side of the kennel…

…and shred it.

Apparently, if Zeus couldn’t have the bed…

Nobody could.

So we gave up.

The dog beds disappeared.

The blankets stayed.

We Accidentally Created a Training Tool

Over time, our blanket collection grew.

There are blankets in the kennel.

Blankets on the couch.

Blankets in the car.

Blankets almost everywhere.

Then something unexpected happened.

We started using one during training.

Whenever we practiced the “place” command, we’d send Zeus to a blanket.

Eventually, the blanket itself became the cue.

Now if Zeus spots a blanket lying on the floor anywhere in the house…

He immediately walks over and lies down.

Nobody has to tell him.

In his mind…

Blanket equals place.

It wasn’t something we planned.

It just happened naturally.

Of Course… Blankets Are Still Toys

Just because Zeus sleeps with blankets doesn’t mean he treats them like a normal dog would.

Every morning he proudly pulls blankets out of the kennel and drags them around the house.

His mission?

Find the perfect sunny spot.

Once he finds a patch of sunshine, he’ll spread out his blanket, burrow underneath it, and spend the next hour soaking up the warmth.

We call it his daily trip to “el sol.”

Sometimes he decides Electra should join him.

Whether she wants to or not.

He’s been known to grab the blanket while she’s lying on it and drag both the blanket…

and Electra…

across the floor.

She rarely appreciates his enthusiasm.

He doesn’t seem to notice.

Why We Still Choose Blankets

At this point, we’ve completely given up trying to convince Zeus that dog beds are better.

Honestly…

I prefer the blankets.

They’re easy to wash.

Easy to replace.

There’s no stuffing to vacuum out of the kennel.

And they’ve become one of our most useful training tools.

Sometimes the solution you never planned ends up being the best one.

Our Favorite Blankets

One thing I learned through trial and error is that not every blanket survives life with Zeus.

Our favorites are simple baby fleece blankets.

They’re soft, inexpensive, easy to wash, and don’t have the satin ribbon border that Zeus loves to shred.

We’ve collected quite a few over the years.

Honestly…

I don’t think you can ever have too many blankets if you own Zeus.

Do All French Bulldogs Like Blankets?

Not necessarily.

Every Frenchie is different.

Some genuinely love dog beds.

Some prefer the couch.

Some want to sleep under your comforter every single night.

For Zeus, though, blankets became his comfort item.

They’re where he sleeps.

Where he relaxes.

Where he feels safest.

Sometimes finding what your dog truly loves takes a little trial and error.

For us, it just happened to start with one very special blanket.

🐾 Frenchie Tip

If your Frenchie destroys every dog bed you buy, don’t assume they hate being comfortable.

Try offering a soft fleece blanket instead.

Some dogs enjoy being able to burrow, nest, and rearrange a blanket in ways they simply can’t with a traditional bed.

You might discover—just like we did—that their favorite “bed” isn’t a bed at all.

💬 What About Your Frenchie?

Does your Frenchie have a favorite blanket?

Do they burrow underneath it like Zeus?

Or have they claimed something completely unexpected as their favorite place to sleep?

I’d love to hear about your Frenchie’s bedtime routine in the comments.
