When we decided to bring home our first French Bulldog, I did what most new dog owners do.

I researched everything.

I read article after article.

I watched YouTube videos.

I wanted to know exactly what life with a Frenchie would be like before Zeus came home.

Almost every article described the same dog.

French Bulldogs were supposedly laid-back, mellow companions who loved people, adored their families, didn’t need a lot of exercise, and had a few common health issues to keep an eye on.

When we met our breeder, they painted a very similar picture.

They told us to pay attention to their ears because Frenchies can be prone to ear issues.

They joked that their farts could clear a room.

And they assured us that all of their French Bulldogs were lazy, mellow little dogs.

Honestly…

That all sounded pretty manageable.

Then Zeus came home.

A couple of months later, Electra joined the family.

And while some of what I read turned out to be true…

A lot of it couldn’t have been further from our reality.

Here’s what I expected…

…and what actually happened.

🛋️ Expectation: A Lazy Couch Potato

Reality: Tiny Professional Wrestlers

Everything I read made French Bulldogs sound like expert nappers.

I pictured a dog curled up beside me all day with the occasional burst of energy.

For a little while, Zeus fit that description.

Then Electra came home.

Now our house regularly turns into a WWE championship match.

The zoomies are one thing.

The wrestling, chasing, and nonstop playing are something else entirely.

They’ll sprint through the house, bounce off furniture, tackle each other, and then somehow find enough energy to do it all over again.

Yes…

They love naps.

But “lazy” isn’t the word I’d use anymore.

🦴 Expectation: Food Would Make Training Easy

Reality: Stubbornness Changes Everything

Electra napping

French Bulldogs are famous for loving food.

Mine absolutely do.

The problem isn’t motivation.

It’s attitude.

Zeus knows exactly what I’m asking him to do.

He simply likes to negotiate first.

Sometimes he’ll look at me as if he’s calculating whether one piece of cheese is really enough compensation.

Electra is much more cooperative.

She’ll happily earn her treat and move on.

Same breed.

Same rewards.

Very different personalities.

🩺 Expectation: Just Watch Their Ears

Reality: There Was So Much More to Learn

One of the biggest pieces of advice we got from our breeder was to keep an eye on their ears.

That was great advice.

French Bulldogs can definitely be prone to ear infections.

What nobody really prepared us for, though, was everything else.

Skin issues quickly became one of the biggest challenges in our house.

Ironically, Zeus has almost no skin problems.

Electra, however, seems to know our veterinarian by first name.

Allergies.

Rashes.

Itchy skin.

It seems like we’re always managing something.

Then there’s IVDD (Intervertebral Disc Disease), a condition French Bulldogs are unfortunately more prone to because of their body structure. It wasn’t something I remember seeing discussed very often when I was doing my research, but it’s now one of those health concerns that’s always in the back of my mind whenever the dogs are jumping on and off furniture or getting a little too wild during playtime.

And while it isn’t related to the breed itself, I’ll never forget the day Zeus broke his leg as a puppy. It was one of the scariest experiences we’ve ever been through, and it reminded me how quickly an ordinary day can turn into an emergency.

If there’s one piece of advice I’d give every new Frenchie owner, it’s this: seriously consider getting pet insurance before you need it. Between breed-specific health concerns, unexpected accidents, and emergency vet visits, it can make an enormous difference. For our family, pet insurance isn’t just another monthly expense—it’s part of responsibly owning a French Bulldog.

❤️ Expectation: Great Family Dogs

Reality: They Absolutely Pick Favorites

This one was true…

Mostly.

French Bulldogs are incredible family dogs.

They adore our son.

They love spending time with all of us.

But they also choose their people.

Zeus is attached to me like Velcro.

Electra loves everyone…

But if a new person walks into the room willing to pet her, she’s convinced she’s found her newest best friend.

They’re family dogs.

They’re just very opinionated about who gets the most attention.

📢 Expectation: Quiet Little Dogs

Reality: Neighborhood Security System

One thing I kept reading before bringing Zeus home was that French Bulldogs weren’t big barkers.

I’d really like to meet those French Bulldogs.

Mine bark at delivery drivers.

Neighbors.

Dogs walking by.

Leaves blowing across the yard.

A squirrel that looked suspicious.

Sometimes I think they bark simply because one of them started first.

Apparently Zeus and Electra have appointed themselves head of neighborhood security.

🤷 Expectation: One Frenchie Prepared Me for the Next One

Reality: Every French Bulldog Writes Their Own Rulebook

If Zeus had been my only French Bulldog, I probably would’ve thought I had the breed figured out.

Then Electra arrived.

Potty training?

Completely different.

Sleeping?

Different.

Walking?

Different.

Eating?

Different.

Personality?

Completely different.

Owning two French Bulldogs taught me there’s no such thing as a “typical” Frenchie.

🎒 Expectation: The Dogs Would Stay Home While I Worked

Reality: They Became My Coworkers

Before Zeus, our dogs stayed home.

That’s just how we’d always done things.

Now?

There’s a travel bag packed by the front door.

A pop-up kennel under my desk.

Blankets.

Pupsicles.

Yak chews.

Water bowls.

Cleaning supplies.

Extra poop bags.

Somewhere along the way, bringing my French Bulldogs to work became completely normal.

Honestly…

I wouldn’t have it any other way.

😂 Expectation: I’d Have a Dog

Reality: I’d Have Two Tiny Comedians

I expected companionship.

I didn’t expect daily entertainment.

Zeus is always planning his next crime.

Electra is convinced every visitor came specifically to see her.

Some days I feel less like a dog owner…

…and more like the audience for a comedy show.

🚪 Expectation: I’d Adjust Their Schedule

Reality: They Adjusted Mine

Before French Bulldogs…

Leaving the house was simple.

Now every trip starts with questions.

Is it too hot?

Did I pack water?

Does Zeus have his blanket?

Will Electra need her diaper?

Can they come with us?

Without realizing it, they slowly became part of almost every decision we make.

❤️ Expectation: I’d Get a Dog

Reality: They Changed My Life

This is the one nobody could’ve prepared me for.

I thought I was bringing home a pet.

Instead…

I got two best friends.

Two office coworkers.

Two comedians.

Two little shadows that somehow make every ordinary day better.

I started taking them to work.

I write stories about them.

I even built an entire blog around our adventures together.

Five years ago, I never would’ve believed that.

Today…

I can’t imagine life without Zeus and Electra.

What I Learned

Looking back, I don’t think the articles I read or the advice from our breeder were wrong.

French Bulldogs can be mellow.

They really are amazing family dogs.

Their ears do need attention.

And yes…

Their farts absolutely can clear a room.

But no amount of research can prepare you for your French Bulldog.

Every dog is different.

Every personality is unique.

And honestly…

That’s what makes owning them so much fun.

🐾 Frenchie Tip

Research the breed.

Listen to your breeder.

But remember that your French Bulldog is an individual, not a checklist.

Some will be lazy.

Some will be athletes.

Some will love everyone.

Some will pick one person and never leave their side.

Learning who your Frenchie is will always be more valuable than memorizing what a website says about the breed.

💬 What About Your Frenchie?

What expectation did your French Bulldog completely destroy?

Was there something nobody warned you about before you brought them home?

I’d love to hear your “Expectation vs. Reality” moments in the comments!
