Getting a second French Bulldog wasn’t something we planned from the very beginning. But after bringing Zeus home, we quickly realized he might be happier with a canine companion. Looking back now, adding Electra was one of the best decisions we ever made. After bringing Zeus home, life was pretty wonderful. He fit into our family almost immediately, and we couldn’t imagine life without him as you can see from my first post!

But as the months went by, I started noticing something.

Whenever my son was at school or I was busy around the house, Zeus seemed… lonely.

Maybe it was just me, but I couldn’t shake the feeling that he would love having another dog to play with. The more I read about French Bulldogs, the more I kept seeing people say they often do well with a canine companion. Since we had always had multiple dogs over the years, it just felt like the right decision.

One thing that was completely new for us was owning a boy dog. Every dog we’d ever had before Zeus had been female, so when we decided to add another puppy to the family, I knew I wanted a little girl.

I reached out to our breeder and asked if she had any future litters planned (this was in August).

She told me she was expecting a litter in September, and the puppies would be ready just in time for Christmas.

Perfect.

I put a deposit down on the first female puppy and eagerly waited for the big day.

A few weeks later, the breeder called with exciting news.

The puppies had arrived…

…and there was only one little girl in the entire litter.

Without ever meeting her, we knew she was ours.

Then life threw us a curveball.

When Zeus Broke His Leg Everything Changed

During the first week of October, Zeus suffered a freak accident and broke his leg. It was one of the scariest experiences we’ve had as pet owners. (I’ll save the full story for another post, but let me just say this: if you own—or are thinking about owning—a French Bulldog, get pet insurance. You’ll thank yourself later.)

As Christmas got closer, we started wondering if bringing home a new puppy while Zeus was recovering was the right thing to do. Would it be too much for him? Would a playful puppy make healing harder?

In the end, we decided to move forward. We’d already fallen in love with the idea of giving Zeus a sister, and we hoped everything would work out.

Bringing Electra Home

The day we brought Electra home, we couldn’t have been happier.

Even with his injured leg, Zeus was immediately curious about his new little sister. He wanted to sniff her, follow her around, and gently play whenever he could. It didn’t take long before we realized we’d made the right decision.

That first night, we put Electra in her kennel for bed.

To our surprise, Zeus didn’t want to leave her side.

Instead, he climbed right into the kennel with her, curled up next to his new sister, and fell asleep.

It was one of those moments I’ll never forget.

From that day on, they weren’t just two dogs living in the same house—they were family.
