Halloween with French Bulldogs should be adorable.
You buy the costume. You picture the photos. You imagine your little Frenchie waddling around dressed like Chucky while everyone tells you that you have officially won Halloween.
Then you actually put the costume on your dog.
And if your dog is Zeus, he immediately tries to eat it.
Welcome to Halloween at our house.
Our First Frenchie Halloween: Chucky
When we first got Zeus, I had big plans for his Halloween costume.
Chucky.
Come on. A little grumpy-faced French Bulldog running around dressed as Chucky, complete with the wig? It was going to be PERFECT.
Zeus disagreed.
He hated wearing it and pretty much immediately tried to eat the wig.
So instead of the adorable Halloween photo shoot I had imagined, I had a French Bulldog attempting to destroy his own costume.
Apparently being a murderous doll was fine.
Wearing hair was where he drew the line.
Then Came Electra
The following year, we had Electra, and I had learned something from the Chucky incident.
Maybe simpler was better.
I got Electra a little Dracula cape.
She loved it.
And she looked ridiculously adorable in it.
Zeus?
I didn’t even bother.
Zeus is not a clothes guy. He has made his position clear, and apparently I needed a second French Bulldog before I was willing to accept that.
Electra, on the other hand, would probably let me build an entire Halloween wardrobe for her.
Which brings me to the costumes I would absolutely choose if my dogs were willing participants.
1. The Potato Costume
A French Bulldog.
Dressed as a potato.
Do I really need to explain this one?
Frenchies already have the general shape and energy of an emotional baked potato, so this feels less like a costume and more like accurate labeling.
It’s simple. It’s ridiculous. It’s adorable.
10/10. No notes.
2. The Pope Costume
This one absolutely kills me.
Something about a French Bulldog’s naturally serious little face combined with a Pope costume is perfection.
Nothing says “Jesus loves you” quite like a grumpy Frenchie Pope silently judging your life choices.
Bonus points if your Frenchie already sits around the house looking deeply disappointed in everyone.
Zeus was born for this role.
He just doesn’t know it.
3. Chucky or Freddy Krueger
Despite my first attempt ending with Zeus trying to consume Chucky’s hair, I still love horror costumes on French Bulldogs.
Chucky. Freddy Krueger. Anything involving a tiny Frenchie dressed as something terrifying.
It’s the contrast.
They’re supposed to look scary, but they’re still standing there with giant ears, short legs and that Frenchie face.
I would absolutely try Chucky again.
Wig and all.
Zeus would absolutely try to eat it again.
4. The Snail Costume
Forget the Frenchie bee costume for a minute.
I want a snail.
The giant snail eyes. The shell. The little Frenchie body underneath it all.
It’s so weird that it becomes adorable.
And since French Bulldogs are already professional waddlers, I feel like the snail costume really lets them work with their natural talents.
Electra could pull this off.
Zeus would probably make it approximately seven feet before staging a protest.
5. The Headless Horseman
This might actually be my favorite.
The Headless Horseman dog costume is one of those costumes where the little rider sits on the dog’s back while your dog walks around unknowingly creating comedy.
Put that on a French Bulldog?
I’m done.
The tiny legs. The serious face. The headless rider bouncing along on top.
I desperately want to see Zeus in one.
Which means there is approximately a zero percent chance Zeus will cooperate.
Electra, however…
I have hope.
This Year’s Experiment: King Zeus and Queen Electra
Despite everything I have learned over the years, apparently I remain optimistic.
This Halloween, I’m going to try again.
The plan?
In my head, it’s going to be adorable.
Electra will embrace her role as queen immediately because, frankly, she already believes she is one.
Zeus will look regal and handsome and tolerate his costume long enough for me to get the perfect photo…we hope.
That’s the vision.
Reality may involve Zeus running away from a crown.
I will report back.
When Your Frenchie Hates Costumes
If your Frenchie is like Zeus and thinks clothing is a personal attack, I’ve learned not to force it.
Instead, I usually go with something easy like a cute seasonal harness or accessory.
I especially love the holiday designs from small pet brands like Sassy Woof because Zeus can still participate in Halloween without me trying to convince him that wearing a wig is somehow in his best interest.
He gets to be festive.
I get my Halloween photos.
Nobody eats synthetic hair.
Everybody wins.
Apparently Halloween Has Already Started
I was at Petco this weekend, and apparently September means we are officially in FULL HALLOWEEN MODE.
Pumpkin-flavored dog treats.
Pet costumes.
Halloween toys.
Coffin-shaped dog beds.
Honestly, the dogs may have a better Halloween selection than I do.
And yes, I looked at all of it.
Because even after the Chucky disaster, I am apparently still the kind of person who sees a ridiculous dog costume and immediately thinks:
Electra would look SO cute in that.
Zeus?

Our Frenchie Halloween Verdict
If I were choosing purely on cuteness, my top five French Bulldog Halloween costumes would be:
Potato → Pope → Horror Character → Snail → Headless Horseman.
But after actually dressing French Bulldogs for Halloween, I’ve learned that the best costume is ultimately the one your dog is comfortable wearing.
For Electra, that gives me options.
For Zeus, that may mean a Halloween harness and calling it a day.
But I’m not giving up yet.
This year we have a king and queen to crown.
