If you’ve ever tried trimming your French Bulldog’s nails, you know it isn’t always as simple as grabbing a pair of clippers and getting the job done.
For years, I never trimmed my dogs’ nails myself. I always took them to the groomer or the veterinarian. Honestly, I was terrified of cutting the nails too short, and the thought of wrestling a dog who didn’t want their paws touched wasn’t exactly appealing.
When Zeus and Electra joined our family, I assumed we’d stick with the same routine.
But French Bulldogs are different.
Since they don’t require regular haircuts, making a trip to the groomer just for a nail trim started to feel unnecessary. I figured it was finally time to learn how to do it myself.
That’s when the adventure really began.
Our First Attempt
I asked our dog trainer if she could teach me how to trim their nails during one of our training sessions.
I picked up a handheld nail clipper and we decided to start with Electra because she’s usually the easier of the two.
Everything was going great…
…for exactly three nails.
Then Electra got so nervous from the clipping sound that she peed all over me.
Needless to say, that wasn’t how I pictured our first nail trimming session going.
We managed to finish her front paws, but after that she wanted absolutely nothing to do with the clippers. We tried a grinder too….even worse.
Then Came Zeus…
Zeus was an entirely different challenge.
Before breaking his leg, he’d had his nails trimmed at the groomer and the veterinarian without much trouble.
After months of veterinary visits for his injury, though, everything changed.
He developed a real fear of the vet, and unfortunately, nail trims became part of that fear.
We couldn’t even get near his paws at home.
When we tried during training, both my trainer and I quickly realized we weren’t going to win that battle safely.
So back to the veterinarian we went.
Unfortunately, it was one of the hardest appointments we’ve had with him.
He growled.
He tried to bite.
He completely shut down.
The veterinary staff eventually got the nail trim finished, but they also told me that future visits would require both medication beforehand and a muzzle for everyone’s safety.
Walking out of that appointment, I knew we had to find another solution.
Looking for Something That Would Help
My trainer suggested trying a grooming restraint sling that’s designed specifically for nail trims.
I’ll admit…
It looked a little ridiculous.
But at that point I was willing to try just about anything if it made the experience less stressful for everyone.
So we ordered one. I got the one with the velcro wrap around the body for extra security which was reassuring.
Did It Work?
We started with Electra.
True to form…
The second the nail clippers came out, she peed in the sling.
Thankfully this time, at least it wasn’t all over me.
After that, though, she actually stayed still long enough for us to finish.
Progress!
Then it was Zeus’s turn.
For him, it’s definitely a two-person job, and because of his history, we still use a basket muzzle for everyone’s safety.
Is it perfect?
Not even close.
But compared to trying to hold him while trimming his nails, the sling made the process much more manageable.
Where We Are Now
We’re still working on helping Zeus become more comfortable with nail trims.
We’ve practiced handling his paws.
We’ve tried making it a positive experience.
We’ve taken things slowly.
He actually enjoys having his feet touched.
It’s the sound and feeling of the grinder that he simply doesn’t trust.
Maybe one day that will change.
Maybe it won’t.
For now, our goal isn’t perfection.
It’s making nail trims as calm, safe, and low-stress as possible for everyone involved.
Sometimes that’s enough.
The Grooming Sling We Use
Honestly, we weren’t expecting miracles, but it ended up making nail trims much more manageable.
The grooming hammock has been a great addition to our grooming routine. It’s not a perfect solution, and it certainly didn’t erase Zeus’s fear of nail trims, but it made the process much less stressful and gave us more control than trying to hold him still.
One thing to keep in mind is that this type of grooming sling may not be practical for every dog. It works well for our French Bulldogs because of their size, but larger or heavier dogs may not be safely supported by something like a standard shower curtain rod. If you have a bigger breed, you’ll want to make sure you have a secure place to hang it or consider another setup.

What We’ve Learned
If there’s one thing Zeus and Electra have taught us, it’s that every Frenchie is different.
Some dogs will happily sit through a nail trim with a few treats.
Others may need extra patience, creative solutions, and a lot of reassurance.
For us, the biggest lesson has been that success isn’t about getting perfect nails every time. It’s about making the experience as safe and stress-free as possible—for our dogs and for ourselves.
We’re still figuring it out, and that’s okay.

If your Frenchie is nervous about nail trims, start slowly. Spend time handling their paws without trimming, reward calm behavior with treats, and don’t be afraid to stop and try again another day. Building confidence takes time, and every small win is progress.
