When we brought Zeus home, I already had a feeling he wouldn’t be an only dog for very long. If you’re wondering, “Should I get a second French Bulldog?” you’re definitely not alone. When we brought Zeus home, I already had a feeling he wouldn’t be an only dog for very long.

For more than twenty years, my husband and I had always had at least two dogs.

There was something comforting about it.

They had a companion when we were at work.

Someone to play with.

Someone to nap beside.

Someone to simply exist with.

After our Beagle and our Pomeranian/Chihuahua crossed the Rainbow Bridge, our Husky became our only dog.

The funny thing was…

She actually seemed happier being an only dog.

She had always preferred having all the attention to herself.

But even though she enjoyed it, something about having just one dog in the house felt…quiet.

When she passed away and we eventually welcomed Zeus into our family, I knew almost immediately that I wanted him to have a canine companion.

Everything I had read about French Bulldogs said they were incredibly social dogs that often thrive with another dog around.

It just seemed like the right thing to do.

Waiting for the Right Puppy

There was just one catch.

Zeus was our very first boy dog.

My husband had always preferred female dogs.

His biggest complaint?

Male dogs have a reputation for marking everything.

When I brought up getting a second Frenchie, he agreed…

With one condition.

“She has to be a girl.”

Fair enough.

About two months after bringing Zeus home, our breeder reached out to let us know one of their females was expecting what would be their final litter.

I immediately told her we wanted one.

The first meeting

As long as there was a girl.

When the puppies were born in September, there was exactly one female in the entire litter.

One.

Decision made.

I’ll admit…

There were a couple of puppies that caught my eye more than she did.

But considering my husband’s one request, she was always meant to come home with us.

That tiny little puppy would eventually become Electra.

Then Everything Changed

While we were waiting for Electra to be old enough to come home…

Zeus broke his leg.

It was one of the scariest experiences we’ve had as dog owners.

Thankfully, by the time Electra was ready to join our family, Zeus had healed beautifully.

Physically.

Mentally, though, I worried about everything.

Would he get too excited and hurt himself again?

Would he be rough with such a tiny puppy?

Would he be jealous?

Would he even want another dog in the house?

I had built every possible worst-case scenario in my head before she ever walked through our front door.

The Moment They Met

Then Electra came home.

She was tiny.

Honestly…

Looking back, she almost felt too tiny.

She had reached the age where puppies can legally leave their litter, but she was so small that I remember wondering if she could’ve benefited from another week or two with her mom.

When we finally set her down beside Zeus…

I held my breath.

She looked so little compared to him that I honestly worried he might accidentally squish her.

Instead…

He surprised me.

Completely.

Zeus Became the Big Brother I Never Expected

From the very beginning, Zeus was unbelievably gentle.

He didn’t charge at her.

He didn’t knock her over.

He didn’t treat her like a toy.

He simply wanted to be near her.

He followed her around.

Checked on her constantly.

Watched over her like it was suddenly his job.

One of my favorite memories is how badly he wanted to sleep with her.

We had her sleeping in her puppy kennel, and Zeus kept trying to climb inside with her.

Not because he wanted her space.

Because he wanted to be with her.

Even when they started playing, he seemed to understand she was just a baby.

He played gently.

Patiently.

It was like watching a completely different side of his personality appear overnight.

I expected chaos.

Instead…

I got to watch my little puppy become an incredible big brother.

Was Getting Two French Bulldogs the Right Decision?

For us…

Absolutely.

Of course, having two dogs means twice the food.

Twice the vet appointments.

Electra at 8 weeks old

Twice the toys.

Twice the snoring.

And yes…

Twice the stubbornness.

But it also means watching your dogs chase each other through the yard.

Seeing them curl up together for afternoon naps.

Watching one comfort the other after a long day.

Those are moments you simply don’t get with one dog.

Looking back, I don’t think we just gave Zeus a companion.

I think we gave him his best friend.

And in return…

They’ve both made our lives even better.

What I Learned

One of the biggest lessons I’ve learned is that you can’t always predict how your dog will react to a new sibling.

I spent weeks worrying about whether Zeus would accept Electra.

Whether he’d be jealous.

Whether he’d accidentally hurt her because of the size difference.

Instead…

He showed me a side of himself I had never seen before.

Sometimes our dogs surprise us in the very best ways.

🐾 Frenchie Tip

If you’re thinking about adding a second French Bulldog to your family, remember that every dog is different. Take introductions slowly, supervise those first interactions, and give your older dog time to adjust. You may be surprised by how naturally they bond—but don’t expect every pair to have the exact same experience.

💬 Are You Thinking About Getting a Second Frenchie?

Do you have one French Bulldog and you’re thinking about adding another?

Or do you already have two?

I’d love to hear how your introductions went and whether your dogs became best friends like Zeus and Electra.
