Do French Bulldogs pick a favorite person? When we brought Zeus home, I was convinced I already knew the answer.

It wasn’t going to be me.

Our son was eight years old and couldn’t wait to have a puppy to play with. Zeus was an energetic little guy from the moment we brought him home, so it seemed like the perfect match.

At least, that’s what we expected.

Fast forward a few months, and Zeus had made his decision.

Somehow, I had become his person.

Looking back now, I realize it wasn’t just one big moment that created our bond. It was a series of little moments that completely changed our relationship—and when Electra joined the family, she proved that not every French Bulldog chooses a favorite person the same way.

We Thought Zeus Would Choose Our Son

For more than twenty years, we’ve always had multiple dogs, and whenever we brought home a puppy, they naturally gravitated toward whoever matched their personality.

When Zeus came home, we assumed that would be our son.

Both were full of energy.

Both loved to play.

There was just one problem.

Zeus didn’t know when to stop.

When he got excited, he’d jump, zoom around the room, and nip at ankles like so many French Bulldog puppies do. We worked with him constantly, and while he’s improved a lot, he’s still an enthusiastic boy who sometimes gets a little carried away.

Our son loved Zeus, but after a few surprise ankle attacks, he became a little more cautious during playtime.

They still played together, just not quite the way we had imagined.

Then Everything Changed

Not long after, Zeus broke his leg.

Looking back, I honestly think that was the moment our bond really formed.

Suddenly, he wasn’t the fearless puppy bouncing around the house anymore.

He was scared.

He needed someone to carry him, comfort him, and take him to what felt like endless veterinary appointments.

That someone became me.

My husband was wonderful with him too, but his job had him away from home much more often. Our son was afraid he’d accidentally hurt Zeus while he recovered, so naturally he kept his distance.

That left Zeus and me spending a lot of quiet time together.

Me.

Him.

And his blanket.

Those weeks changed everything.

Our Bond Was Built in the Little Moments

It wasn’t just the broken leg.

I was also the one taking Zeus on errands whenever dogs were welcome.

I handled most of his potty training.

We settled into routines together.

Looking back now, I realize relationships aren’t usually built during the exciting moments.

They’re built during the ordinary ones.

The early mornings.

The quiet afternoons.

The car rides.

The cuddles after a long day.

Before I knew it, Zeus had become my little shadow.

Then Electra Came Along

When we added Electra to our family, I expected something similar.

Instead…

She completely rewrote the script.

Electra doesn’t seem interested in having one favorite person.

She loves everyone.

If you’re willing to pet her, throw a toy, or simply make eye contact, congratulations—you’ve just become Electra’s favorite person.

At least until someone else walks into the room.

She isn’t stingy with her affection at all.

She simply wants as much love and attention as she can get from whoever happens to be nearby.

Her puppy months were also…a little more challenging.

Between giardia, constant potty accidents, and cleaning her kennel far more often than I ever wanted to, there wasn’t quite as much time for those quiet bonding moments that Zeus and I had during his recovery.

She demanded attention.

Zeus simply appreciated it.

Maybe Dogs Really Do Match Our Energy

I once read that dogs often bond most closely with the person whose energy matches their own.

Whether that’s scientifically proven or not, it certainly fits our house.

Zeus loves routine.

He likes knowing what comes next.

He’s playful, but he’s also perfectly happy curling up with his favorite blanket after a busy day.

Honestly…

That sounds a lot like me.

Electra, on the other hand, is affectionate, social, and always looking for the next person willing to shower her with attention.

That sounds much more like my husband.

Maybe that’s why their personalities naturally clicked.

So, Do French Bulldogs Pick a Favorite Person?

Based on our experience…

Yes.

I think many French Bulldogs do.

But I don’t think it’s always about who feeds them or who gives the most treats.

Sometimes it’s the person who comforts them when they’re scared.

Sometimes it’s the one who spends the most one-on-one time with them.

Sometimes it’s simply the person whose personality feels the most familiar.

For Zeus, that person ended up being me.

For Electra…

I’m not sure she’d ever pick just one.

And honestly, that’s one of the things I love most about both of them.

They remind me every day that no two French Bulldogs are exactly alike.

🐾 Frenchie Tips

❤️ Don’t take it personally if your Frenchie chooses someone else. Dogs form bonds for all kinds of reasons, and it doesn’t mean they love anyone else less.

⏰ Time together matters. The everyday routines—walks, training, errands, and quiet evenings on the couch—often build the strongest relationships.

🩺 Be there during the hard moments. Looking back, Zeus’s broken leg wasn’t something I’d ever wish for, but helping him through his recovery created a bond I’ll always treasure.

🐶 Every Frenchie is different. Zeus became my shadow. Electra would happily accept belly rubs from just about anyone. Both personalities are completely normal.

❤️ Enjoy the relationship your dog chooses. You can’t force a favorite person, but you can build trust by being patient, consistent, and simply spending time together.
